track pad button knackered, how much to fix?

Anybody have an idea how much fixing a 'track pad button' would cost?

My Step-Dad is extremely heavy handed and has basically destroyed the button so it no longer works. :mad: He says it isnt him, but he also managed to destroy 3 mice when I had my Atari ST years ago. He seems to think the harder you hit the button the faster stuff works.

I am VERY pissed off right now because I was looking to sell it very soon. :mad:

If it's still under warranty, then Apple should fix it. Apple doesn't define 'normal use' and since everybody has a different touch when using a computer, I think you should assume that his falls within what is considered normal. These buttons should withstand quite a bit since they're clicked hundreds of times every day. I noticed one in Best Buy had a non-functional button too.

Sorry. MB and It's out of warranty by 2 weeks. :mad:

UPDATE: The whole top enclosure will have to be replaced according to an Apple Cert. reseller so I am just waiting on a quote from them. Then I will see what Apple have to say. :(

My next Mac will have AppleCare. :rolleyes:

If Apple warrantied its repair parts for a year, I'd say go for that and pay a little (lot?) more, but they only guarantee their work/parts for three months.

Check out pbparts or, as others have said, ebay, buy the upper case and replace it yourself. It should be easy if you follow instructions here ifixit.com

You can't buy parts from Apple. You can take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider and pay for parts and labor. You're looking at about $225+ or $285 if they send it into the repair center instead of doing it in-house.

The only other way to get parts are when people buy computers to part them out. Thus ebay, or places like ifixit.com where they charge $250 for it.
 
Ok for anyone thats interested. I have rung around and got quotes from various sources and guess what...? Apple is cheapest :eek:

I think its because the resellers have to pay pretty much full whack for the parts then charge VAT and labor. One none Apple quote wanted 85+VAT for the part plus £50 labor and inspection.

Pfff... inspection. It doesnt need inspecting I can tell you it doesnt work.

Anyhoo... Apple want £70 (inc VAT) for the part and £50 for fitting it.

So I have made a reservation at the Apple Store. :D

Oh wait... £120 :mad:

EDIT: Guy at genius bar said he would do it for free. :D Sweet!
