I've just converted a file to be able to play it on a video iPod using Handbrake but I can't find it, (i forgot where I set it to go!) It's somewhere on my system, (I have 2GB less space than before,) but i've no idea where. Is there any way to search the entire hard drive for most recently created files, (or something similar?)

Are you using Tiger (10.4)?

If so use spotlight (either directly and search for .m4a or .mov and group by date) or use smart search, cmd-F, and and a similar search Last Modified today and Size greater than 1GB).
