Hey guys,

Picked up a 1.6GHz MBA today from the Apple store. Opened it up, set everything up, and all seemed well. I then started trying to move some files off of a USB hard drive, and I began noticing that my clicks were occasionally not being recognized. I didn't think too much of it, I just figured I hadn't gotten used to the new laptop.

Then it started getting worse. I would very distinctly click the track pad button and the click wouldn't register. So I'd push again, and again, and again. Finally, I'd squeeze the button from the top and the bottom of the case and with some extra force it would sometimes register the click. At this point it was basically completely unresponsive to any clicking.

I restarted, but to no avail. I couldn't get any clicks at all to register. I had to go run some errands, so I turned the machine off by holding down the power button and left it be for a few hours.

When I finally returned home, I fired it up again and all seemed normal--for about 15-20 minutes. Then once again, the trackpad button becomes unresponsive again. Just as before, sometimes putting extra pressure on it would finally register a click. Eventually though, it would just not register any clicks. I'd let it sit for a few minutes, then "Boom!" its clicking normally again.

I obviously need to take it and have it replaced, but it's so intermittent I'm afraid it's not going to act up for the Genius. I used it for almost an hour tonight without any issues, but I've had three or four separate and distinct times where the trackpad has become completely unresponsive.

Anyone else have any similar troubles with their Macbook Air?

Let the rise of issues of yet another  product begin!

I say bring it in, and make sure it wasn't working before hand, and keep using it in the car to keep its "not working" on.

Heh, I have considered this option. That's be an interesting walk through the mall to say the least.

Nope. Even if I did, what difference would it make in how the trackpad button behaved? Shouldn't you still be able to use the trackpad button normally even if you also had tap to click on?

Well even on my friends MacBook I have sometimes notice where the click didn't react if an accidental gesture was registered.

I've had my MBA for a 6 days now and notice the same thing. When highlighting text in safari or word, I notice from time to time, the trackpad button will not respond, even with my thumb firmly on the button.

At first, I thought it was just the edges of the trackpad button that needed more positive force, but it still doesn't respond when pushed from the middle.

I'm probably gonna ask the store to swap me out for another one.

I seem to have the same problem. Sometimes the button works fine. I thought it didn't work at all then realized if I hold the button it will almost always register after a few seconds. However, double tapping the trackpad always provides an immediate response.

Figured out the problem

Well I think I fixed it. In addition to the trackpad button problem (which was weird because if I held the button down long enough it would register) the system was freezing periodically for a few seconds.

Checked the logs and saw this:

So it looked like Parallels was doing something. Strange because I had replaced Parallels with VMWare Fusion (maybe it was pissed!?). Seems that when I migrated from my MBP it brought over Parallels, I deleted the executable package from the Applications folder but it was still loading the kernal extensions.

I ran this: sudo /Library/StartupItems/Parallels/Parallels stop

And everything is fine.

Now I just need to figure out how to remove all the artifacts from Parallels.

swapped after 8 days

My MBA trackpad button stopped working usually 1-2 hours after being used or on. If I was particularly firm I could sometimes get it to work, but not consistently.

AppleCare said it was a known issue and to return to an Apple store for a swap. The "genius" at my local store was able to duplicate the problem and offered to swap it out "because it was within 14 days of the purchase" -- I think I would've asked his supervisor for a swap even if it was after 14 days since it was a "known issue."
