Just had to reboot my MBP M1.

But strangely when it logged into desktop, I could get the trackpad to work at all.

The top left finder menu bar items were highlighting as if the mouse was scrolling over them, but that was as much as I could see along with a magnified static cursor in the middle of the screen.

I had to do a long hold on the power button, after starting up again all was great.

I want solid software to go with what is a solid machine!

Anybody else notice these behaviours with MBP/MBA trackpads?

hi,

i have the same problem with my Macbook Pro M1 every now and then.
i boot it up, type in the password, and right after that when it boots onto the desktop, i see the mousecursor stuck in the upper left corner. i still can highlight stuff with the trackpad, but the movement is not shown by the mousecursor..
once i restart the machine, its gone most of the time. Really annoying...

Have you tried running diagnostics?
Boot into recovery then press command & d at the same time.
Lol, diagnostics doesn't work for me. - It just reboots constantly!

I am convinced its just software related though. - Its only occurred once for me.

Command +D works.

Boot into recovery. Once you get to the screen showing the cogwheel and your HD on the left, press and hold Command +d.
It doesn't, Andrew.
It's somehow stopped working.
I get the language selection screen and click language then OK and it just reboots back to the same screen.
It just won't start, for some reason.

This is a common problem. It appears to have started with Big Sur 11.1. My theory is that moving the trackpad/mouse cursor around while MacOS is still loading itself causes the issue. Therefore, when you reboot your Mac let it load itself fully, in particular let the Menu Bar at the top appear properly before you start to move the cursor around. This should not take more than few seconds.

I tried it again just before I responded. I have been able to access it twice in a row with no problems.
I tried it yesterday and a few days before that and it just won't start.
Come to think of it I've never successfully run it on this MBA. The MBP ran it successfully but not this MBA.
Mind you I've only had it a month or so and didn't try to run it until a couple of weeks ago.

Does not work this way, at least not for me ATM.

Apple are just as confused, particularly as my Applecare+ purchase required a successful diagnostics to register it. They just went ahead and registered it anyway! - Seems they know its broken...

I stopped the diagnostics just before the screen came up that shows your serial number.

It is good you could get the AC+ registered.

I have not been able to reproduce this issue, so I think it was a total one-off that it happened! - not concerned by it.

Id be interested to understand the theory you suggest further?

Thanks for sharing this.

So maybe the fact I have the MBP and you the MBA, is this the reason that we see different behaviours! Hypothesis #1. ?

Mine gets to language, I select OK and it just restarts to same language screen. This is infinite as a process so I always give-up.

Apple are aware, and have accepted it as not working currently on my machine! - Need more people with MBP and MBA M1 to test this and report to help narrow down if its H #1 or A-another.

just a theory on how we use to solve problems so they get solved, we did last century and some parts of last decade, but I forget troubleshooting is deemed uncivilized nowadays, like right guard anti-perserants!

Id be interested to understand the theory you suggest further?

This describes exactly my multiple attempts to start diagnostics.
Also on an Air.

Oh, so it happens on both of the notebook M1 Macs! humph.

H #1 = rejected.

Ill also add, apple had me reinstall MacOS just to be on the safe side, this did not fix the issue!

Strangely I returned my first M1, a MBP, due to a hardware fault the diagnostics test showed up. It ran fine on that machine but not this Air.

It sounds like software from your post and 00713. Even though Apple is aware due to your contact, I would still file a bug report so that it gets into the correct system for review.

@07713 You should file a bug report as well.
