Hi all.
Is it possible to trade in an older iPad after pre-ordering/purchasing a new one?
I’m hoping to pre-order a new IPP next week, but I’m not sure if applying a trade-in during the pre-order process will slow down the process. Also, I was hoping to trade in the old iPad at my local Apple store, if that changes anything.
TIA

You could trade it in to add credit to your account, but not account to a purchase after you've made it, no.

Remember, Apple doesn't take the actual trade in, it's Phobio. It's perhaps just as easy to use any number of trade in services available, after your purchase. They are several good ones.

I'm curious about the details of Apple Trade In for pre-ordered products – in my case, an iMac (but the same issue, as the shipping schedule matches those for the new iPad Pro).

I'd like some overlap to transfer data from my old Mac to the new Mac, with time to make sure everything is in order. Does anyone know how long one has to return the old Mac/iPad? Does the clock start when the new Mac/iPad is shipped?

I think if you trade in using the Apple retail store the trade in is completed. Don’t have to deal with Phobio and their antics either.
This. I initiated the trade-in with Phobio through the mail but after reading about their shoddy reputation I decided to go to the store. The specialist took a few glances at it, checked a few things off on their iPhone and took down the serial number. I walked out with a $300 gift card, no problems.

Hi @iamMacPerson, are you saying you walked into the store without an appointment or pre-arranging somehow to trade in at the store, or is doing the trade in at a store an option when you go to the Apple web site?

In today's Apple climate, you have to make an appointment for pretty much anything, trade-in included. I believe there is an option on the appointment website for other. I had to do it for my watch trade in.

Just use the Apple Store app as regular, during the selection process it will give you the option to add tablet as trade in, paste the serial number and you will get the amount discount inmediately.

If you opt to trade in an ipad with the purchase, then they charge the card the full amount. Once you send your device in, they credit the card the amount. I have done this in the past and charge my apple or debit card. More convenient with a CC over a debit card IMO

You need to set up an appointment for a shopping visit on the website. They were plentiful when I booked for the next day and I avoided having to walk around the mall killing time had I made it in person.

Does anyone have experience with how Apple Trade In works with a preorder? Is the box only sent when the product ships? I would ideally keep my iPad/Mac until the new one arrives and have some overlap to transfer data.

If like the AUP you get the return kit after the device shipped. They don’t expect you to send in prior. I called and ask for more time once because delayed in pick up and it was no problem.

My most recent experience with trade-in went as as followed:
I ordered online instore pickup on release date iPhone 12 pro, and later the iPhone 12 mini.

I applied for the trade-in during the online process for instore pickup.
When I went to my appointment, I said I didn't want to mail in the trade-in. I wanted to trade it now against the Purchase.

They charged my Apple Card for the entire purchase, and applied the trade-in value to my Apple Cash card. Since you can use your Apple Cash card to pay toward balance of the Apple Card I had no prob with it.

It all played out pretty smoothly... 10% military discount, and 3% cash back added to my Apple Cash Card.

Does anyone know if you have a choice of trading in on the spot at an Apple store or doing the mail-in trade in? I'm thinking of trying to see if I can get the 12.9 at retail but I have a trade in to process. I'd prefer to pick up the iPad, take it home, and then transfer my data etc prior to trading in the old iPad. If in store, do I have to turn over my old iPad or can they initiate a mail in return of the old iPad while I am in store? It's a long shot anyway as I'm sure they won't have any iPads anytime soon but just in case they do -- I'd love to have the option to sit with both the old and new iPads before trading it in.

Don’t think it says that you can’t. If you buy online with store pick up it will probably set up as mail in. Won’t get credit up front. Will have to pay full price then get credit after they receive.
