Trade in for new 21.5" iMac?

I have a 2010 15" MacBook pro 2.4ghz i5. It's gotten me through my first year of college but Im looking to upgrade to a more powerful machine. Is it worth trading in my laptop for the new iMac?

If you need portability, stick with the Macbook Pro. If you don't, it's up to you whether the MBP is enough for your current needs or if you want to upgrade to an iMac. You can probably get $1000 for the Macbook Pro still.

but if you mean just going in and buying a new one, it probably depends on what you're going to school for.

when I was in school, I didn't ahve the spare $1200-1800, so no, it wasn't worth it. Because I had a laptop that did EVERYTHING i wanted it to, and so spending months worth of late-night taco bell didn't make any sense.

but, if you really do need to, then it may be worth it. "worth" is subjective.

EDIT: also, i liked being able to take mine to class. Doing so with an iMac is probably less ideal! haha
 
For a student, no. Buy yourself a nice monitor, and you get the same effect, but can still move about. I would not like being stuck in one place with my computer, in fact it would be all but impossible for some of the work I have had to do.

I think so. I just sold my 2010 2.4 15" MBPs when the TB MBPs were announced. (Actually I sold all 3 of my Macs b/c I believe the price of used non-TB Macs is going to plummet soon. TB is the real deal being pushed by Intel, not Apple.) I got $1400, which I think was a decent price for it considering but I bet if I held it for another year I'd be lucky to get $900.

I'm a big fan of flipping computers often. The cost is a couple hundred. Where do you get a nice performance bump for so little money? Think about it, it's cheaper than buying AppleCare.

I agree, I wouldn't use it myself since I ebay all my machines, but it's still a trade in program nontheless, and could be very much worth it for individuals not wanting to go through the hassle of ebay or craiglist, or who want to avoid a chance of any scam entirely.

This is a great strategy and one that I've been starting to pick up the pace myself over the last 3 years now as well...

5 years x $400 = $2000...The price of your new computer right there. :)
