Trade-in policy?

I keep reading rumors about trade in policies for wifi owners to 3G. Now i know some of you find this distasteful, unethical, or immoral. My original intent was to sell my wifi on eBay, or craigslist, or simply hand-me-down it to one of my employees.

But if a trade in is an option I would consider that as well.

Is there a formal policy on this (link please) that Apple has published?

If there's a thread on this please point me to it, but a search didn't find a formal policy statement.
 
its not immoral or unethical in the least. If you are within the terms of the return policy, you do what you want. The return policy is in place for a reason.
 
There is no trade-in policy. People who are still within their return period for the store are returning the wifi iPad and planning on purchasing the 3G version. If you bought your iPad at launch you are most likely past the return period.
 
There's no trade in policy. If there was, I would be in line now... I'm going to stick with jailbreak iPhone tethering until AT&T for now. If AT&T blocks it then I'll trade up via the eBay route.
 
Yes, there is a trade-in policy if you bought w/i the last 14 days:

15% restock fee then buy the model you want.

If you are outside 14 days then ebay and use proceeds to help pay for model you want.
 
I spoke to a Genius who spoke to his manager yesterday at my Apple store in the Domain here in Austin. He said those who want to trade up to the 3g from launch day is fine (outside of the return period). No restocking fee. Good luck!
 
I think I'm headed to the Apple Store today to "trade up" if that's the case. The wireless reception on the wifi model I have is horrid at home and takes over 30 minutes to connect on campus.

Well, I've decided that for the way I work and want to use my iPad, ubiquitous connectivity is a must. So I'll definitely be getting a 3G model, just not sure what to do with my Wifi.
 
I returned my wifi at Best Buy a little while ago. I am a Silver member. They took it in the back to look at it and then returned it no question. That was nice.
 
I bought my 64G WiFi on launch day at a small local reseller. I took it back on the last day to return. They gave me full credit of purchase price toward a 64G 3G. Picked it up Today :D
 
I got my 32GB iPad Wifi on lanch. I called my Apple store yesterday to see if I could exchange it for the 3G even though I was outside of the 14 day return policy and the guy said he had to ask his manager. He got back on the phone and said the manager okay'd it but said I'd have to pay a 10% restocking fee.
 
I had no problem trading my wifi version in. Store manager waived the restock fee and I walked out paying 32.00 cash....not a debit or credit card
 
You got lucky there. I had to pay $60 restocking fee to upgrade from 32G Wifi model bought on launch day. The guy would not waive the restocking fee but would let me return it even though it was beyond the 14 day period. I am considering it as a rental fee (albeit high) for use of the iPad for a month, and I was using it quite heavily.
 
I'm still torn on whether to do it or not. I signed up for a Verizon MiFi because AT&T's 3G coverage is very scarce where I live (Cincinnati, OH) and I travel to Indiana a lot during the summer/fall and there is practically no coverage there while Verizon is pretty much all of Ohio and Indiana. I hate that there is a monthly cap of 5GB on the Mifi with AT&T is truly unlimited. I have 30 days to return the Mifi to Verizon without having to pay the early termination fee. I can't decide what to do.
 
The employee at the Genius Bar in the Lenox Square Apple Store wouldn't let me trade-up to a 3g iPad but they replaced it because of the wifi issues I was having.

The only difference thus far between my original and replacement is that the Home button is less clickier (It's not fun sitting in a class constantly clicking the ome button).
 
It's not a matter of an upgrade issue particularly... like I wanted an even newer toy, the campus network (I.E. UGA login) doesn't work well with the iPad. Fine on my Macs but the web based login freezes.. takes 30 minutes of rebooting to connect.

I said this to the guy (who said this was his first iPad situation). I should of asked for the manager or went to a different store.

Used to live in Cincinnati but my experience was quite the opposite. Went from Verizon (horrible coverage) to AT&T before the iPhone even came out. Had no coverage problems with (3G too) AT&T in Cincinnati.
 
I went to the Apple store last Thursday and asked about the possibility of upgrading my 16GB 3G if I found it was too small. He told me to load it up, and if I wanted to exchange, just don't delay because of availability issues. Not a word about a restocking fee. I went back today and behold! A restocking fee since it's open. Huh? I think he said 10%, which is a small break, but it almost doubles the cost of an upgrade to 32GB.

I'm still on the fence about it.
