Trade Ins?

I got my 17" Powerbook in Jan. of this year. One of my friends told me that if Apple comes out with something to replace yours a certain amount of time after you've gotten yours... that you can send it in a replace it with the new version. Well, since they just came out with the new 17" Macbook Pros last weekend, do you think I'd be able to do that? I figured it was worth looking into at least.

If you have an unopened box, you can return a product within 14 days, if you have opened it you can return it with a 10% restocking charge
There is a limited price protection in place, which means if the price drops on the exact model you bought within a limited number of days, you can get it adjusted downward. All of this is for purchases direct from Apple, other resellers may have other policies. Check the fine print for the exact terms, I am not 100% sure of the details.

90 days is quite a long time to upgrade to something better. However, I got a 512 ipod shuffle in December as a gift. Never opened it and had a gift receipt and went to the Apple store almost 2 months later and they gladly took it back. I ended up going with the 1GB shuffle instead, as it was a free upgrade (due to the price drop).

But maybe CPU's are different because you already used it and there is much more money involved.

If you are having problems with it make sure you take it in and get them to look at it. If you have a serious enough problem they might actually replace it for you with the new model since they obviously aren't going to be making anymore of the 17" PowerBooks. I can't guarantee anything but I have known people that had their computers replaced by newer ones from Apple. You also may want to consider Applecare because if you have problems further down the road they may replace it then. I believe Applecare is almost a must on the laptops.
