however it contains sports teams logos
is this an infringement of the sports teams trademark on their logo

Well, we're mostly programmers here, not laywers. I don't think anyone wants to give you bad advice. But since you asked twice I'll do it:

Go for it. What's the worst that could happen?

Just be sure you notice that I said bad advice ;).

Of course you can't use trademarked logos, just the same as you can't print shirts and sell them with trademarked logos, legally

Well, realistically, if you give away your widget, it promotes the sports team, it's clear the widget isn't affiliated with the teams or leagues, it doesn't portray the teams in a negative way or associate them with something negative then *maybe* no one will care. It would be infringment, but maybe no one will object.

If you want to do it right, though, you've got to get permission. I have no idea how you'd go about that. Contact the leagues' marketing offices? There might be some straightforward way to do this. I mean every newspaper in the country might want to display team logos along scores and schedules, and you are looking to do the same thing.

If it is pro teams, you will probably not get permission to use them for free. The major sports leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL) are fiercely protective of anything related to their sport, and they charge a lot of money for people like ESPN, Fox, or Yahoo! to use them. The NFL is trying to claim it even owns the rights to player images and for the statistics related to those players (this is in court right now).

If whatever you're doing is low-profile enough, you'll probably get away with it, but if they wanted to I think they could legally come after you and at minimum compel you to pull down the images.

all this is good to know and i guess it would be just easier to not use the images

thanks
