transering data using SuperDuper

hey yall
i am selling my current mbp on ebay, and i was wondering...i have copied my whole hd onto my external hd using SuperDuper!. Do i just get superduper on my new mbp and just copy everything from my external to my internal hd? Will all the applications still work or will i have to reinstall them?

I use SuperDuper and I would not transfer applications from one model MBP to another model MBP. It might work, but I'm guessing you might run into trouble later and then you'll just have to reinstall anyways.

I would say copy all your data files and profile over, but definitely reinstall your apps.

With that said, I have not actually attempted to transfer applications in this fashion myself. Perhaps someone else with more experience in this area can provide a better option.

I'll second that, and go further; even your profile can have problems being copied. Backup everything to the external drive, that's still a good idea. However, once you turn on your new Mac, connect the drive and it will show up like a second drive and just copy over only what you need. You can still get issues with application settings and the like.

And if you use .Mac, backup everything from it seperately!

what means back up from .mac separately? (i mean most data are not on .Mac anyway since you have only a GB. iphoto, presentations and pdf's alone are >>10GB on my mac)

doesn't have OS X a transfer utility where you connect your old mac or a fire wire HD to the new one and it transfers all documents and settings automatically?

The SuperDuper documentation says to not use it to transfer applications. I ignored that when I got my recent MBP, and tried to move everything over from my Mac Pro. Big mistake. Don't try it.....

I also tried it with Chronosync, another big mistake. They work great on just the Home or Document folders, but more than that seems to not work.

You could use the migration assistant if you have the 2 machines next to each other.
