I have a late 2012 iMac and recently installed an external SSD for the system and apps which makes it super fast again.

The internal Drive I use for file storage only. No system is on it.

Is it possible to connect a usb or thunderbolt to the iMac and share files from the internal drive to a MBP? Also back and forth? Even though there is no system on it?

This can be setup through file sharing? Also can this be setup in such a way that only the assigned MBP can take files off and not any laptop that the cable can be plugged in?

Thanks guys

It doesn't matter whether the internal drive has a copy of the OS on it or not.
