I just got a new 17" laptop and im in the process of moving files from my old computer to the new one. Is there a way to preserve my iphoto library and bring all the photos over?

You can always select all the photos inside iphoto and drag them to a folder.

Try this, go to the users folder/yourusename/pictures and then drag the iPhoto Library to the same location on your new mac and start up iPhoto, I don't know if it will work, try it.

iPhoto library transfer

i once realized that the comments i had made in the info pane of so many of my picctures had become as valuable to me as the photos themselves (old family history, et al.), so i went to forums asking how to preserve them. i was told to select all albums and burn to cd. this would save not only the pictures, but the comments. this seems to me a good way for you also. simply burn all your albums to cd directly from iPhoto and copy into new iPhoto from the cd. everything in an album aautomatically appears in the library.
