I added my mother on my Apple account as a family member. She recently switched to iPhone and when setting this up we found she had about $24 in credit from a gift card.

I can't remember how she got the credits but she's really not interested in purchasing music or movies. A while back we tried purchasing something through her account and it charged it to mine, I'm assuming since I'm the organizer.

The other morning she woke up early, I guess was bored, and tried sending me a gift of $25 to clear out the balance. She kept the balance and my checking account was charged $25. Weird, since I had a $50 credit on my account.

Is there any way to get rid of these credits? I'm assuming we'll need to maybe remove her from the family thing but would it just charge to her checking account then?

Any other advice on this?

"You can't redeem or return iTunes or Apple Music Gift Cards or unused store credit balances for cash, except as required by law. If your jurisdiction allows for refund of redeemed gift balances, you can request a refund by contacting iTunes Store Support"

One thing you could do is buy some music for yourself with her balance. Since purchased music doesn't have DRM, you can use the files.

Thanks. So I'd have to remove her from family, use those funds, then give the music to me?

What happens to her purchases when she joins my family again? Do they "become" part of mine?

I don't use family sharing, but yes, I think so (but they would only show up in your cloud account as long as she is part of the iCloud family). Of course, you can simply download the songs and keep the files no matter what.
