transfer movies off apple tv to new mac

I lent my dad my AppleTV, as it was full of my collection of films and TV shows, now he has bought his own and wants to transfer the movies off it, on to his mac so he can sync to his new one!

I understand the basics of doing this, but i am concerned that when i try to sync them, i will wipe all the movies that he has purchased through iTunes!

Any tips or advice?

The easiest way to do this would be to copy the movies from your iTunes library ON YOUR MAC (not your AppleTV) on to an external hard drive. Lend the external hard drive to your dad. Then your dad could add those movie files to his iTunes library on his MAC. Then his AppleTV would sync with his Mac. If the movies are not protected, that should work fine. If protected, you would have to authorize his computer on your account.

Don't violate copyright laws!!!!
 
Im not concerned about my movies, it is the official downloads he has purchased from apple that i want him to have on his mac.

the AppleTV is synced with my mac, but he has entered his iTunes account details to download movies, so i want them transferred off the AppleTV to his mac that doesnt have them on.

and for the record, im a photographer and have nothing but respect for copyright laws.
 
I think I understand. If you attach your AppleTV back to your computer, it should copy the movie files that he purchased onto your computer. Those files would not play on your computer unless your computer was authorized for his account. You could then transfer those movies to an external hard drive and transported to his computer. Once the files are on his computer, added to iTunes and authorized, they could be synced back to his new AppleTV.

Warning: I have never done what is described above, but I think it is more than an educated guess, because I am relatively familiar how the files are treated by iTunes and AppleTV.
 
Thanks for your help! Only just got round to trying this.

it is very slowly transferring all his all his movies from the AppleTV to the new mac.
