Transfer photos from camera to iPad via cable...?

As far as I understand it should be possible to import files from camera to the new iPad Pro 11” with USB-C port via USB-C to USB-C (?) cable.


Is that a hardware or software thing (iOS 12)? I was wondering whether the same would be possible with Lightning to USB-C cable on iOS12 with a bit older iPads...?
