Transfer Songs From iTunes

How do I transfer songs from iTunes on my iMac to new iPhone 11?
I'm running High Sierra 10.13.6 on the iMac. I can't do an update on the iMac since a lot of my apps and my webcams aren't compatible with anything higher.
I go into iTunes on the iMac, but the phone isn't recognized. Only thing I can figure out is phone isn't recognized by the older OS.

Phone wasn't syncing with iTunes. Installed latest version of iTunes, phone was then recognized by iTunes and the transfer was made.
Didn't realize songs on iTunes stayed on iTunes and don't go to the cloud.
