I just bought the 5g this morning and haven't been able to get it to connect to my computer at work.. it has that damned XP issue of itunes not running. is there a way to manually upload songs to the ipod so that they show up in the music menu?

on windows, you can use ephPod if iTunes won't work.

I used it while I was still a windows user and it worked just fine.

What do you mean the dammed issue of itunes not running? what happens when you plug the iPod in?
Is iTunes installed?

I have seen numerous areas on the web while researching my issue that the latest itunes has problems running on XP.

I plug my ipod in and it connects and itunes tries to open up but then i get an error and it tells me if i want to send a report or not.

thanks to the person who suggested the alternative to itunes

there's a new product out, iLoad. you can load your CDs there and it transfers it straight to your iPod. i dont know how much it costs. plus, if you're dependent on music on your hard drive or ITMS, this device won't suit you.

Just enable the ability to see 'Hidden and System Files', open the iPod_Control folder, then open the music folder and upload music into any of the numbered folders.

TEG, this doesn't work on the iPod I've tried (5th gen). I see a bunch of shortened names for folders and songs, and just uploading music files/folders doesn't make them appear on the iPods music list. There is probably something else that's going on (like a cached file list or something) and that's why it won't work. Are there any programs that do this besides iTunes (I won't update to v5 or v6)?

Usually Windows users looking for an iTunes alternative try ephpod (try VersionTracker, the normal ephpod site seems to have run out of bandwidth.)

What about Mac users?
You might try installing amarok via Fink, or maybe try building your own copy of gtkpod. There isn't much demand on the Mac side, since iTunes has always been there to deal with iPod. Is there any particular reason why you can't move on to iTunes 6?

Certain programs don't work with songs purchased from iTMS 6.

Edit: I just found out that you need iTunes 6 to buy songs from the iTMS. A few days ago I was able to buy some songs w/iTunes 4, but I guess that's the end of that. Someone needs to update JHymn to work with v6. :(

If you have used iTunes 6 on your iTMS account, you can never go back to an earlier version.
