I see there's a new way to transfer by holding your phone over the other. Is this still going through cloud or just a direct transfer through Wi-Fi direct.
The old methods were iTunes and cloud but this method seems to still be going through cloud?

I think you need to clarify what you're asking.

Holding what over what? One iPhone over another? Or Over a MacBook?
Are you asking if files begin to transfer just by touching them together? The answer to that is no. You have to initiate it somehow.
Are you thinking of AirDrop? If so, this is a good item to read.

I'l make this easy to understand....
If we are talking about holding something over the other and iTunes that's how 2 phones would transfer.
So one old iPhone and new iPhone. When you start setting up the new iPhone it asks you to hold the old phones camera over the image of the new device. By doing this it starts a transfer but the part I was confused on was it using cloud or direct Wi-Fi connection??

OK, you mean Automatic Setup. Your original post said nothing about old phone to new phone or exactly what you were transferring. This might help. But the transfer is done over Apple's proprietary connection that is similar to BT between Apple devices. None of the articles say that BT or WiFi have to be on explicitly though it does recommend being connected to WiFI so that it can download apps. Only some information is transferred this way, it is not a full iCloud or iTunes restore.

Ok thanks. So you wouldn't need to use cloud then correct?

That was actually a problem for me due to I normally use iTunes. Since my computer doesn't support the latest version of iTunes then I'm stuck w/o otherwise buying a new computer or upgrading the computer software or simple using the cloud...? Unless there's another way around it?
