Transfering Files From PC to Mac

Hey guys-

I just recently purchased a pb and just trying to get prepped and know what i need to before i can open it and experiance it. How do i trasnfer my files from my pc to my mac...is their a easy way basically? Can i connect via USB? Do i need an additional program, or when i plug in the two usbs will it know?

Also i have a ipod, and currently it is formated for pc, if i want to use it with my powerbook, do i need to reformat it to mac...loosing the music on there, than put it back on?

Welcome to Macs.

Could you enable your iPod for disk usage and then drag your files form the PC onto it. Plug it into the Mac (don't let iTunes update it, you'll get a dialogue box, say no) and drag your files back over onto the Mac.

As for reformatting the iPod, it's not necessary. The Mac will work just as well with a PC formatted iPod but a PC will not recognise a Mac formatted iPod. However, you will have to re-sync it with the Mac obviously because an iPod can really only be used with one library.

You cannot network through USB AFAIK however, you can use an ethernet cable and if you follow this guide to networking OSX and Windows you'll be fine.

Easy peasy ethernet

I recently did this using an ethernet cable and it was an absolute breeze. On your PC right click the folders you want to copy and enable sharing. Plug one end of the ethernet cable in the pc, one end in the mac and then click on network in Finder and navigate to the folders on your PC. I think this can be done using USB but you need special equipment/software. You can just use a normal ethernet cable to do this.

Wow this would be better, cuz i can do the ipod trick but i only have usb 1.1 on my pc, so it'd take a bit! Do i need to set up a home network on my pc tho? Cuz if so, not sure how to do that.. tried it once, and couldnt figure it out...

Just put any network cable between the two, then look on your PC for it's IP address, and enable sharing. Go back to the mac and at the finder from the menu bar Go->Connect to Server
And type in smb://ipaddress/
Now just drag and drop your files as you see fit.

It doesn't matter when connected to a modern mac as they have auto sensing ethernet.

thanks jarred and gibbon. I was able to get the files from old old win98 machine. Thanks a lot.

For my part, Just enable sharing (or for older os like win 98, google "how to set up a small network with win 98".

I need to do same, transfer from windows98 to imacg5. Modern mac doesn't need crossover cable, but does windows 98 machine require crossover cable?

I found buying an ethernet card (for pci slot) was $5 after rebate at compusa; and cable was $5, so I'm good to go for $10. I looked into many ways and ethernet seemed the cheapest.

I thought that if just one end could adapt (modern Macs) then it really doesn't matter whether the other can or not.

Of course, a crossover cable is guaranteed to work too.
