plenty of different ways to do this, one would be to copy/backup your music to cds/dvds, benefit of this is then you have a restore point at least.....

The artwork is already stored within the ID tags so you shouldn't have to worry about that. Once you find a way to transfer the files all you have to do is drag the files into the iTunes app while it is open, assuming you'll be using iTunes. If you are already using iTunes for Windows make sure you also move over the "iTunes Music Library.xml" folder to keep your stats.

side note...

Is there a way to transfer data from my laptop to a desktop? For example, can I just hook up a firewire, um, wire connecting the two and transfer stuff? Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

I'd assume you'd be able to set up a home network with the two comps on them and transfer the files over if your pc's hd is formatted for fat32 format. Then just drag and drop your itunes folder over. I'm sort of in the same situation as you, just ordered me a new ibook and I need to get all my songs off my pc, but onto a external hd.

Try these two things one of the two might work for you, I just checked some sites. Credit goes to straform and xlas999999

I've done some moving from machine to machine. What I would do is:
1. Don't re-import them.
2. Drag over the entire iTunes folder from Windows to the Mac. The library files should be in that folder. Make sure that they come along to the new machine in the same location. They contain playlists etc.
3. Start iTunes and tell it where that folder is (in iTunes prefs, Advanced), if you didn't put it in the default location on the Mac. Double-check that iTunes is actually looking for the folder where it is located, and if not, point it there.
4. Finally, if iTunes still doesn't seem to "see" everything, drag the iTunes folder onto the iTunes icon. This seems to make iTunes re-read everything and re-link everything.

or if you have a iPod big enough....

Now that you tell me that you have an iPod it can be easily done.

1) Transfer EVERYTHING onto your iPod. Do an Automatic update in iTunes (prefs>ipod> check auto sync)
2) Plug your iPod into your Mac (don't have iTunes initialize it or whatever)
3) Download iPodRip
4) Fire iPodRip up and click Recover Songs or something to that effect

That will copy all the metadata and there is also an option to do playlists as well.

hope that helps out some.
