I have a family plan on sprint and my father is the account holder. He is a bit of a cranky old bastard (I say that lovingly) and will not give att@t his ssn # so I can move over my phone number.

I admit that asking for the account holders ssn is silly because they don't need to do a credit check on him. My father has a firm belief that is it illegal for anyone but the bank to use a ssn to was a way to identify him. He will give them a copy of his bill and any other info they need, just not his ssn.

Is there any way around this? They said they have to have it to move over the number. He was with me when I was ordering my phone and when he heard that he yelled at the poor sales clerk and left the building. I work in customer service so I know he can't do anything about a required field in a computerized system.

Still does anyone know what i should so or where i should call to try to get around this. My phone is probably going to show up on monday and if nothing else i plan to go back to the store and try to get a better answer then, "its impossible".

Plus i never thought to ask. is it the full ssn they need or the last 4 #'s

For a new account they need the full SSN; if it's just for account security such as transferring numbers, it should be last-4 only.

Well I gave them my full ssn, I have no such problems. The iphone is just going to be me, so they might not need his full ssn since his only real involvement in this process is so I can get my phone # from his sprint family plan account onto my single att account.

I didn't think about how much of his ssn they might need until I wrote this post. Maybe he wont be so cranky about that. I will call the store directly and pray I can get a live person tomorrow. The store has a habit of just going to voice mail, but because it's full nothing can actually be done. Or it will say its transfering you to a sales rep only to say none are aval. and that once more nothing can actually be done.

Tell them he is an illegal alien and doesn't have a full SSN... I didn't know you had to be a US resident to have a phone here...
