Hi guys!

I would like to export only 3,000 of my 10,000 photos/videos from the iPhone media library to external storage devices, specifically the original files. But it’s not working:

1.) When I connect a USB 3 stick or a Samsung T7 2TB or 4TB SSD to the iPhone, regardless of whether it’s formatted in APFS or ExFat, I always get a message saying I don’t have permission, even though I’ve set the drives to “Ignore ownership” on the Mac.

In the iPhone camera settings, I have .HEIC enabled. All .HEIC and even .DNG files give me a message saying I don’t have permission on the external drive when I try to export the “unprocessed original.”

However, if I change the iPhone camera settings from .HEIC to “Maximum Compatibility” and then take a new JPEG or .DNG photo, I can export the “unprocessed original” to the USB stick.

2.) When I connect the iPhone directly to the MacBook Air M1 or the 2020 iMac and try to import using “Photos,” “Photos” cannot generate all the thumbnails, and after 2-3 minutes, it just shows blanks. The “Image Capture” app on the Mac also hangs because it apparently has problems generating thumbnails.

I’ve restarted all devices multiple times and tried different cables. All devices have the latest software updates.

I don’t want to use iCloud or any other paid service for this basic media-importing function.

Is the iPhone 15 Pro Max too weak for 10,000 photos/videos?

Why doesn’t it recognize that my drives don’t have access restrictions?

I don't know about the other issues you've been seeing with attempting to export photos from your iPhone to external storage devices, but last week I saw the issue with the Photos app on my M1 Macbook Pro not showing all the thumbnails it's supposed to, after I connected my iPhone 15 Pro Max to the Macbook and tried to import some photos from it. My iPhone has about 13,500 photos and videos, and i was just trying to get Photos on my Macbook to import about 130 new photos I'd taken over the course of about a week. I seem to have fixed this not just by restarting my iPhone, but by powering it off and then back on again, though maybe that's what you mean by restarting. If so, you've already tried this without success, so I don't know why it worked for me.
