Transferring apps from old iPhone to new iPhone

I have done this migration several times with previous iPhones with no issues, but this time seems a little different.

As per typical procedure, I have backed up my old iPhone (6 Plus, iOS 10.0.1) to iTunes, and restored this backup to the new iPhone (7 Plus, iOS 10.0.1). Strangely, not all apps went over to the new iPhone after iTunes was done syncing.

I noticed that some of the apps on iTunes have an exclamation mark next to them. When selecting "Show in Finder", the apps are nowhere to be found.

Hence, I connected the old iPhone and attempted "Transfer Purchases from [old iPhone]" in order to transfer those affected apps. No luck.

I even tried deleting a few of the unimportant ones with exclamation marks and attempted the "Transfer Purchases" method again. Still no luck.

Any advice?

You need to download all the apps to your computer through iTunes. Since app splitting started, iOS devices no longer sync apps to the computer. Transferring purchases really only works for movies and music now.

That's a shame. I have an app that is no longer on the App Store, and it contains sentimental data.

I have no experience of this, so someone else would need to confirm, but could you use a File Manager app with your old iPhone to transfer this App to the relevant iTunes folder on your computer?

Hopefully the user data element would be backed up as normal?

I've tried a variety of those apps, such as iTools, iFunBox, SyncIOS, AnyTrans, etc, but while they list the apps on the old iPhone, any attempt to transfer it to the Mac would be met with some error.

I suspect the user data is backed up, but I can only really view it through the app. I hope I'm wrong, and that I can somehow pull them out from the local backup into a CSV or something.
