My iPhone 7 has approx 60GB of content, mostly photos/videos, and I will be buying the new iPhone 12 when it's released. I will be trading in my iPhone 7 at the Apple shop for the new 12. I only have the standard 5GB iCloud storage for contacts, emails etc.

Whats the best way of transferring my photos over to a new iPhone 12?

1) Transfer the photos/video from my iPhone 7 to laptop, and then delete from my iPhone 7, and copy back to my iPhone 12?
2) Pay for 60GB of iCloud now, get the iPhone 12 and let it sync to my iCloud account to download the content?

Would option 2 take forever?
When handing over my iPhone 7, surely they will need me to reset it and delete content, meaning my photos will disappear from my iCloud?

Thanks

Hi Big Stevie, this is Old Mike.
When you go through the set-up procedure for your new phone you are (should be) given the option to transfer everything - you have to have the new phone next to the old one and it should do it all for you. I've just done that and worked just fine.

Thanks, but to get my new iPhone I'll be trading in my current one at the same time, so won't have them side by side. Unless the Apple sore provide this service?

Would I be better transferring the 60GB of content to my laptop, then reset my phone before trading it in? Or perhaps pay for more iCloud storage and just upload it all to there. then hand the phone in?

Hello,
Why don't you ask the people at Apple store how they proceed? They might allow you to have some time to transfer data between two devices.
On the other hand, the second option proposed by you seems to work fine in my opinion. Buy the storage plan, upload everything in iCloud, then log out from your Apple profile prior to deleting the data on your old device. Thus, everything should remain in the cloud. After downloading it to your new iPhone you could return to the free plan but I am not shure how exactly you should proceed in order to delete extra data from iCloud while keeping it on the device...
Good luck!

Im I right in thinking that I can actually download from the cloud onto my new phone? Or do they just remain in the cloud, requiring the larger storage plan?

If I can, then I guess after buying the storage plan I would have to go to settings on my iPhone and 'check the box' to allow my photos to share with iCloud. Then, when I have reset my phone and handed it in to the Apple shop to get my new iPhone I can just downloaded them back to my new iPhone. I can then uncheck the box so that those photos aren't in the cloud anymore, and then revert back to the free 5GB plan?

iCloud is an option, shouldn't take more than 2 nights on Wi-Fi and charging I guess. Btw why not just restore an iTunes backup if everything is saved in Camera roll?

How are you backing up your phone now?

It hasn't been backed up for a long time as theres nothing important on there, but I would still like to transfer the content to my next phone.

iCloud storage is pretty cheap - less than the cost a a decent cup of coffee a month. You say nothing important but are your photo's and videos not important ? It sounds like they are not copied to your Mac. iCloud backup will make sure your iPhone is regularly backed up, so if you lose, drop or get your phone stolen you can restore all your data as soon as you replace your phone. The added benefit is you can keep all your photo's in iCloud and automatically sync them to all your Apple devices.

It should not take long to restore, its pretty quick to restore so that you can use the phone, then data restore continues to things like the photos app happens in the background.

As others have said Apple will do the transfer for you in store, but you will have to wait while they do it, or you can use iCloud to restore your phone. As others have said you just need to sign out of find my phone and your iCloud account and Apple will wipe the phone for you. Just make sure the SIM is removed before you walk off! I had to replace my phone recently and almost left the SIM in the old iPhone.
