Hey friends,

I picked up the new m1 iPad Pro recently hoping to use it to transfer Red footage from one SSD to another using a usb hub. Both drives read and write at 500+MBps. When I move one file on one of the SSDs directly to the iPad, as expected, its very fast. When I move from one external SSD to another external SSD it’s extremely slow, like over a minute to move a 1gb file.

Any ideas?

I believe that's due to a limitation put in place by iPadOS.

Always blame iPadOS for this. Apple can only Band-aid iPadOS so much. I was excited for external device support back in iPadOS 13 but got disappointed by extremely slow and high chance of failure transfer. Not to mention their methods to handle hard drive is extremely rudimentary and increases the likelihood of internal damage.

If you test the entire transfer speed setup with a different computer, do the speeds differ much? If so, this would likely indicate that the slower speeds are down to the iPad.

I did, I have an M1 MacBook Air that does the transfers flawlessly. I was hoping that “Pro“ actually meant something this time around. Oh well, back to Netflix in bed with this thing haha
