Transferring Files from '08 MBP to i7 iMac

I just ordered my first iMac. (27" i7). When it arrives, I would like to transfer a few gigs (15-20) of data from my early '08 15" MBP to it. I won't be doing the whole Apple wizard transfer thing, as I only want a few folders, not all of my settings.

What would be the best way to transfer these files? I'm thinking firewire. My MBP has both the 400 and 800 port. Would this work well? How about ethernet?

I would like to order from Monoprice, as I still have a $40 store credit. Will this 800/800 cable work with both machines? I get so confused with all of the different cables they have.

While that cable is fine... save your ~$3 and use ethernet since it's just 15-20 gigs of data.

On your MBP, go to System Preferences -> Sharing and tick the File Sharing box to, well, turn on file sharing And add any folders you want to share under "Shared Folders".

After you get your new iMac, in finder, the MBP will appear in the sidebar under "SHARED" and you can access the shared stuff from there - drag and drop what you want to your iMac.

Of course, don't forget to undo these settings after you're done transferring your file... if you want to anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion. I already have a Time Capsule, but now that I think about it, I could just start dumping files on that now, and then copy them from my TC to my iMac when it arrives. I only use Time Machine for a few important folders anyway, so I have a ton of space on my TC.

that would safe you the hassle of going an getting the cable etc. assuming you don't have on already
