Transferring files Mac to Mac

Righty, I am currently using my brothers iMac at the moment which has my iTunes library stored, photos and some University worked saved on it. I would like to transfer these files to my new iMac which I will be getting tomorrow. We will be on the same wireless network, I have heard a firewire route but never actually found a way to do it, or even found a firewire in the shops!

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661 is the firewire mode for transferring files manually. It also tells you what cable you need to connect two systems. This essentially mounts the "target" computer as an external hard drive on the "host." In this case the target would be your brother's iMac, and the host is the newer system. Migration assistant through a wireless network is documented in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3322. The difference between target disk mode and thru migration is that one allows you to pick specific files/folders to bring over, while migration is a "dump," so to speak, from one computer to the other.

Hook up a Firewire cable between the two.

Start Migration Assistant.

Turn on the Mac you will be transferring FROM while holding down the T key.

Really simple.

You can use the network, but its slower.

How about directly connecting the macs with ethernet cable? I did that to transfer files between my macbook pro and my friends imac. It was very simple and easy to do. Just enable file sharing in system preferences and your good to go. You should see a drop box in finder in your public folder and your bro's computer name should appear in finder making it even easier.

depending on how much data it is, you could also use iChat over the wireless network. just enable bonjour and you can easily send files by dragging them to the name in the contact list. ou can also do that (as mentinoed before) by use an ethernet-cable. if you do that, you should turn wifi off for befor transferring to ensure, your files dont go over wifi.

Transferring from an external drive

Can I use Migration Assistant if I have to transfer my files from an external drive to my new iMac? My mother board on my old computer is not working properly. It fried four external hard drives before an Apple Genius at an Apple Store figured this out. I have transferred all of my important files onto a new external hard drive by way of USB 1.1 - very slow but its done. My external drive has USB 2, Firewire 4 and Firewire 8.
