Transferring files to new Mac

Okay, I've looked for a similar thread and can't find one. Apologies if I missed it.

Anyway, I'm looking for advice on how to transfer all my files from a 30 gig ibook to a new 15" powerbook with an 80 gig drive that I'm ordering.

The ibook is running OS X 10.3.4. I imagine the new powerbook would have the same OS.

Is carbon copy cloner the best way? And does it matter that I'll be transferring from a 30 gig drive to an 80 gig hard drive?

Any other recommendations or advice?

You will be pleased to know that Apple is providing this for you. I just bought a 15" powerbook and when you turn it on it prompts you if you want to transfer your files from your old Mac (ibook) to your powerbook. You just need to provide a firewire cable between both laptops.

Duff-Man says....have you actually done this? According to Apple's webpage on this feature it is only available on the June 2004 Powermacs....oh yeah!

That sounds pretty cool, Born Again. Did you do it?

Like Duffman, I thought that feature was only for the new desktops.

In case that doesn't work, anyone else have any advice?
 
Duff-Man says....perhaps Apple's page is wrong and they are now putting into other systems that are now shipping - I don't think there is any hardware requirement besides built-in firewire (correct me anyone if I am wrong) so maybe it was just a matter of getting the new setup assistant into the other pre-builds they load on systems. If it doesn't work, you can still connect your old book in target disk mode and manually copy whatever you need...oh yeah!

This feature is supposed to be in Tiger. It looks like Apple may be slipping it in. Which if true is good news.
 
I just got a brand new 15" powerbook yesterday and was dealing with the same dilemma as the original poster. When I started up my new baby i was presently surprised when I was prompted with a screen asking me if I wanted to transfer files from my old computer. I clicked yes and it told me I needed a firwire cable and sent me through the steps to startup my old computer in target disk mode then it asked me what it wanted to transfer. I transfers your home folder, system folder, Applications, and any other files it finds that it thinks you might need for your apps. So I let it run and when it finished my new powerbook was up and running with all my settings just the way I had them setup on my old iMac. I Absolutely LOVE this feature and I'm sure you will too.
 
Duff-man says....oddly enough, I just stumbled onto this link/story and it indicates that while Apple only states it's available on the new G5's it is in fact on other new systems shipped after the new G5 introduction...I look forward to trying this out when my new dual 2.5 gets here...oh yeah!
