I will be transferring my number from my fathers Verizon account this Friday. I do not have any credit. Since this is not a 'new' line, but in fact a line coming from another carrier, will a deposit be required? For some reason if I remember correctly, I went with my friend a month ago when he switched from his father's Nextel plan to AT&T, and there was no deposit required.... I could have just missed that.

Will the fact that the line is transferring from another carrier be enough for a credit check?

From what I've heard and been told, if you're planning to purchase an iPhone, you will definitely have to have your credit checked. Then you will be asked pay a certain amount for a deposit or won't have to deposit any money. It all depends on your credit.

Not unless the line was in your name on the other carrier. Since it was not, and the new plan will be in your name, your personal credit will have to be run and if you have none, a per-line deposit of up to $750 can be required. I believe the standard for someone with no credit is $500. This must be paid up front when you buy the phone.

I know for a fact my friend didnt have to do this a month ago at AT&T, and the new contract is in his name and he had no credit...

hmmm

So, I'm transferring my Number from T-Mobile. Which the Account is in MY name. Does that mean they won't need to check?

They will still run your credit. Having a good track record with another provider will help you.

AT&T is one of the more difficult companies to get deposit free lines on. Verizon is the toughest. People sometimes think they have no credit when in fact they do, so that may be why your friend was able to get a line deposit free. It also depends on the phone you're buying, the plan you're signing up for, etc. They will be more likely to require a deposit if you're purchasing a pricey phone with a pricey plan to go with it, since the greater the amount of your bill, the greater the liklihood you will default.

you can't port a number to a different provider unless the same name is on the accounts. so if your current number is under your father's name, your father has to be with you if you want to port your number to AT&T.
