I just took a bunch of photos on my 8+ (on iOS 12) and transferred them to my iMac (on High Sierra) using AirDrop. In the past, my phone would say "converting" for a bit, and then eventually transfer the photos to my iMac as JPEGs instead of HEIFs. However, there was no "converting" delay when I transferred the photos today. When I looked at the images on my iMac, they all had ".JPG" file extensions... but when I open them in Preview and look at the Document Type in Inspector, it says "High Efficiency Image File Format"!

So, if I'm not mistaken, this is a pretty big change. 1) iOS12 is now transferring HEIF images over AirDrop instead of converting to jpeg, and 2) HEIF images no longer carry the .heif file extension and are transferred using the .jpg file extension!

(if all of this is old news, I apologize!)

I wonder if it's the same for sending HEIF pictures via iMessage

EDIT: Tested this between an iPhone on iOS and Mac on High Sierra and it sends the picture as HEIC

I (inadvertently) discovered today that sending a HEIF photo you've already taken sends as a HEIF using iMessage... but if you use the Camera feature within the Messages app to take a photo, it sends as a JPEG. Not really sure what to make of that... or how to report it to Apple.

Update: the Camera feature within the Messages app doesn't just send as a JPEG, it actually captures the photo as JPEG... doesn't use HEIF at all. So I'm gonna submit a bug report for that.

Good job catching and submitting that bug!

macOS image capture app also transfers HEIF as-is regardless of iOS setting.
