Ok so I'm about to transition from mobileme and iOS4 to iCloud and iOS5.

Like many people, I have a myname@gmail.com Apple ID I have been using for purchases since forever and I have a myname@me.com Apple ID that was created when Mobileme came out.

I have already figured out that I need to set up iCloud using the me.com ID and then associate the gmail ID to the iTunes Store purchases section in Settings.

What I don't understand is which one I should use for Game Center. My Game Center is currently associated with the gmail account but I really don't want to tie anything to the gmail account unless it is definitely necessary.

So basically I have two questions:

1. Is Game Center directly tied to your game purchases and thus forcing me to need to use the gmail based Apple ID anyway?

2. Can I switch the Game Center to my mobileme address (that no purchases are associated with) before moving to iCloud and keep all achievements and etc.?

You will not keep achievements if you switch game-center accounts.

What I do and recommend.

Me.com/icloud:
Reminders
Notes
Photostream
Docs in cloud

Google apps domain account:
Mail
Contacts
Calendat
Itunes store
Gamecenter
All else

I don't think that will work because I don't believe you can change one Apple ID to an email address used for another Apple ID. Remember, the me.com is an Apple ID.

I'm thinking about doing what Menel suggested.

You can change your apple ID used for purchases to your .me address. That way everything will bender one ID. Go here: http://store.apple.com/us/account/home then scroll down to "Update your Apple ID email address and password" and change your ID to your .me address. This should work.

I tried changing mine to my .me and it won't for this reason. It annoys me that I can't. I hope they fix this issue soon.

Call Apple and see of they'll merge the 2 under your .me ID. I've read some cases of this being successful.

you can not merge two Apple IDs.

i only use my iTunes Apple ID for purchases. the @me.com ID i created for iCloud and all other annoying Apple ID log in needs. i feel better keeping the purchasing ID seperate and less used. ymmv.
