Transitions between superimposed stills - imovie?

Hi,

I am superimposing stills on a 'videoclip' in imovie 10.1. I want the music from the clip playing while different stills passes by. Problem is that I cannot add transitions between the stills which are superimposed on the 'videoclip', what's the problem? Or is it better to remove the moving images from the videclip and keep the sound track, and then add the still images? If so, how do I isolate the sound from the videclip?

Pretty sure that you can't do that, so

remove the moving images from the videclip and keep the sound track

Select the clip, go Modify Menu>Detach Audio.
