Transparency Issue

I'm working on a logo for my band. I scanned one drawing of the the band name, and another of the logo. I want to put the words over the logo. Is there a way make the background of the image with the words transparent, so when I paste it over the logo, just the words show up? I scanned them in just black and white, so if there is a way to make the background color transparent for a paste, it would only be one color (white). Also, I'm using the free "Paintbrush" application; I don't have the money, or the need, for an expensive program. Does anyone know how to do this?

You can download Photoshop for free for 30 days.

I recommend you do that. It will make this a lot easier.

Eponym has a point.

You say you don't have a need for a high end graphics program, and I don't disagree that generally you may not. However, in this instance, you *do* have a need for one.

With photoshop, you can accomplish this task in a huge variety of ways:

You could put the two images on different layers and set the top layer to Multiply.

You could also user the Layer Effects > Blending Options > "Blend if..." sliders to knock out the white bg on the overlaid images.

You could use the magic wand to select the area you don't want, and then delete it.

The list goes on and on.

You could use Gimp as a free solution to do your logo.

There are plenty of tutorials online for making a transparency.
