Transparent .psd in InDesign

I am going bananas!

I have a logo in photoshop (I know, its not a vector, but I'm going to blame the original designer is, and please dont suggest I redraw it either!)

It is 2 balls on a transparent background, saved as a .psd, I placed this in the sales brochure I am doing, in InDesign (this is all CS2 btw), on overprint preview it all looks fine.

However, when I export it to pdf, no matter what settings I use the following happens, the front page, which is one large jpeg as a background, uses the psd file corrently and displays the balls on the background layer, with all around them transparent.

The second page (and all following) have a blue background (done in InDesign) and a strip of gradient, the balls on this appear however with white all around them and upto the edge of the image bounding box.

What is going on here? Its the same psd why is it changing its mind? WHat can I do to fix it?

Any help would be greatly recieved...

EDIT: Further investigation shows that its all fine in Acrobat V7, but I need it to work on V4 too, which is where its not working

check your transparency flattener options.

If you export lower than v6 of Acrobat, the transparency will be off. You will have to do some settings tweaking to get the desired result in v4. Hope that's what you were looking for.

Is it a shape that can be cropped/masked with picture frame? Try that, if not you will have to flatten the whole page before you export.

I´ve had similar issues… Try include ICC profiles when exporting. Solved it for me. Dont´know why, though.

If the color profiles support that transparency it will work, otherwise it won't. Certain color profiles will include information on how to handle transparencies I think. So I'm pretty sure that's why it works.

I have had a similar problem. When I use a background colour that is in PMS the psd-file gets a white box around the item. I solved it by using the Pen Tool (or Magic Wand Tool) to make a path around the motive and so save it as an old fashion eps-file - then it worked fine.

Ive had this problem a few time myself: Here is how to fix it.
Create a selection around the Image in photoshop then convert the selection to a clipping path.
Then when you are in InDesign use that Alpha channel path to map too and youll get a perfect edge no matter what version of Acrobat you export to.

This worked on the front page of the document, where the balls are on an image however on the following pages where the balls are on a gradient (produced in indesign) and a dark blue background (again, done in indesign), the previously mentioned problem occurs. any further ideas?
