My 16/1T M1 iMac screen recently developed the dreaded horizontal lines issue. Of course, it is out of warranty and I live in a state without an Apple Store. An authorized service provider quoted $800+ to replace the screen, and recommended I not waste my money for the repair. So I'm thinking of having some fun.

Option 1 would be for me to remove the iMac M1 logic board/guts and then transplant into either an old intel iMac case or a 3D printed housing that could act like a little Mac mini. If in an external housing I would also transplant speaker(s), fan(s), power button, and power cable of the iMac. I'm not sure how I would do camera/mic though unless moving the insides to another iMac chassis. If I do this, I will need to figure out some way of getting the display signal to either the internal iMac display through a LVDS crossover cable or using a thunderbolt > control hardware such as the 1811 > internal display. If I do this will the logic board throw a fit if a correct M1 screen isn't connected and run at reduced frequency and/or cause other issues?

Option 2 would be to source an M1 iMac with broken logic board, then swap screens with my broken one. Does anyone know if the iMac M1 components are serial-paired? Would the display work at all, would I get nasty messages in the Settings app, and would I have auto-brightness and/or True Tone?

Option 3 is to run it as a server in my basement without fixing the screen. But this the easy way out.

I'm hoping the MacRumors community might have some insight.

Sounds like you’re a proponent of option 2. iMac M1s with bad logic boards are less than $300 on eBay, so I think a screen swap makes more sense as opposed to buying a new screen. Then I could change iMac color too! I could also get an official display from Apple for $500 using their self-service repair program, which i might prefer as the display will definitely retain True Tone.
