I presently use a late 2012 rMBP and a late 2012 Mac Mini (only with 4GB RAM, dual-core i7 CPU version...). Both are now upgraded to Yosemite.

I have absolutely no issues when I want to erase the deleted items in the Trash Box in the MBP. I click on "Secure Empty Trash" and everything is wiped out pretty fast.

But NOT SO, in my Mac Mini. It takes around an hour (maybe even longer...) to wipe out mostly jpg files (say around 3-4.00 thousand of them, totalling again say 2 GB at the most...). The worse news is that I now have around 650GB of movies etc. already downloaded and stored in the HDD. I actually copied them into an external HDD and now want to clean Mini's HDD. Am I going to wait for minimum of 300-400 hrs, to finish this operation?

Sorry folks, I'm still an aged newbee for Mac, may still be asking stupid sounding questions but PLEASE HELP!!!;)

Maybe because the rMBP has an SSD and the mac mini as spinning drive?

Empty trash just flags the files gone, but secure empty trash has to actually rewrite all that space on the hard drive. That could take a spinning drive a long time for a lot of files scattered all over the place.

Out of curiosity, why are you using secure empty trash? For 650 gig of movies, just use the regular empty trash and save the system some wear and tear.

Ooops, am I so dumb or totally blind?

Sure you've got a valid point out there, BUT I cannot see the "Regular Empty Trash" at all? I only have the "Secure Trash" option; that's it!... Do I need to do something in the Systems Preferences alignments to get the regular one???:eek:

open a finder window
choose finder preferences on top menu
go to advanced section untick 'empty trash securely'
