Never been to the states, what shape is the wall socket?

2 pin? 3 pin? flat or round?

Will the US voltage be OK with my UK ipad/...its used to 240v going through it.

You're iPad has never had 240v going through it. If it did it'd be a charred crisp. It charges off USB (5v). The power adaptor is a transformer that switches the voltage down. It works fine on US power. You just need a plug converter. Or a US-spec figure-8 cable.

2-pin, you'll just need a US/UK adapter, as US wall sockets run at a higher voltage than UK ones.

What? Number of pins has nothing to do with mains voltage. The US standard mains voltage is 120VAC, while in the UK it's 240VAC. Perhaps you were referring to frequency?

Nothing has volts "going through it" because voltage is just a potential difference. The power (and therefore the current) is the important factor.

Ah thanks everyone so voltage is no problem...

But two pin, are they flat pins or round ones?...I have some travel adapters from various European trips, but not sure its worth taking them to the US?

So flat or round?

thanks!

Two flat prongs. Like this:

All you need to do is swap out the plug head on the unit for a US model. You don't need an entirely new charger unit. They are universal (100-240v). Same goes for US visiting Europe, you don't need stepdown converters, just swap the plug.

You can usually swing by an Apple Store and if you show them the UK plug and ask nicely if they have a US plug, they'll grab one out of a spare parts drawer. I've gotten both a few German and a few US plugs this way the few times I've forgotten them.
