I am going to mexico for a few days. If I set my iphone to NOT manually check emails, will I be ok leaving it on? Or will I be charged for data/roaming, even if I'm not using it?
Thanks

I just got back from a few days in mexico and decided to just airplane mode it. I was only interested in light ipod use anyway and definitely didn't want any large bill.
Then just take your ipod. Since you can't use the iPhone as a phone, or to check email, or to use any aspect of the browser, however briefly, without incurring insanely high charges (even by simply leaving it on to receive a phone call, in which case it still is covertly downloading data), you have nothing more than a $200 ipod with you for which you paid $600. Save the iPhone for domestic use ONLY!
As the other comments indicate, it is necessary NOT to possess it with phone or data functionality outside the US in order to avoid incurring ridiculous charges. Many people don't realize this, as Apple and ATT hype the phone simply as appropriate for international use and that the plans include "unlimited" data use. Only be reading the fine print of the terms and conditions on the ATT site can you find mentioned that data charges in foreign countries "may" be "substantial." They should put that on the main advertising pages, in print just as large as the hype.
Just enjoy your ipod in Mexico and lock up your iPhone at home.
