I am going to mexico for a few days. If I set my iphone to NOT manually check emails, will I be ok leaving it on? Or will I be charged for data/roaming, even if I'm not using it?

Thanks

And call ATT and tell them you are going out of country and find out what roaming plans you might add.

But for a different phone.

As mentioned above. Take out the sim card or edge will still rack up costs.

Your iPhone is still using Edge if available to check for visual voice mail (and to down load it) and SMS messages, so you will get data charges at $20/megabyte.

Search for the "not for foreign use" thread for lots of conversation about international use.

Just dont sit there and browse online and check emails for a whole week and then come here crying like so many other people did that had a high bill.
They thought data is unlimited anywhere in the world :D

I just got back from a few days in mexico and decided to just airplane mode it. I was only interested in light ipod use anyway and definitely didn't want any large bill.

Leave it at home

Then just take your ipod. Since you can't use the iPhone as a phone, or to check email, or to use any aspect of the browser, however briefly, without incurring insanely high charges (even by simply leaving it on to receive a phone call, in which case it still is covertly downloading data), you have nothing more than a $200 ipod with you for which you paid $600. Save the iPhone for domestic use ONLY!

As the other comments indicate, it is necessary NOT to possess it with phone or data functionality outside the US in order to avoid incurring ridiculous charges. Many people don't realize this, as Apple and ATT hype the phone simply as appropriate for international use and that the plans include "unlimited" data use. Only be reading the fine print of the terms and conditions on the ATT site can you find mentioned that data charges in foreign countries "may" be "substantial." They should put that on the main advertising pages, in print just as large as the hype.

Just enjoy your ipod in Mexico and lock up your iPhone at home.

Actually that wasn't an interesting idea to me either and of course I considered it. I wanted a phone if I needed one, emergencies, etc. So having it with me just in case I did want to enable it was what I went with rather than carrying an ipod and leaving my phone at home.

take out the sim

i would also suggest just taking out the sim. i just traveled outside the US and decided to take out the sim. was able to use WiFi for connecting to the internet. got my email, surfed the web, even used flickIM for some messaging. the only reason i even brought my laptop with me was for Skype calls back to the US. i'm actually considering selling my laptop if skype or some sort of VOIP makes it to the iphone.

Dude, you're an idiot.
You still dont get then concept that you dont get unlimited data usage for free in Mexico.
Some people have no common sense. I guess AT&T or Apple has to announce it to people like you that dont like to use their brain.

Your SOL. You purchased one of the most expensive phones ever- advertised as a tri-band international phone but you have to leave it at home when you travel because Apple does not spend a few hours of developer time to add a swtich to the phone that lets you turn off roaming data. My 3 year old sidekick has this switch- I guess no one with the iPhone travels.....
