Hello!

I have a 2010 MP I'm trying to upgrade to 10.15 to get the latest version of Logic Pro. I was told I needed a firmware update to install Mojave so I tried to do that, got as far as the flashing light/tone but then it simply booted back into OSX.

I have an RX 580 in there so I don't get the grey boot screen and read this might be an issue. As such I swapped to my old 680 as that is a mac card. I tried the firmware update again, and the computer now crashes during the boot loading screen. It restarts to the "your computer restarted because of a problem, wait a few seconds or .." screen, and repeat.

Rebooting into recovery or safe mode gets stuck around 3/4 of the progress bar.

I'm thinking I could make a USB boot drive and install from there, but I don't really know the status of the firmware update and what would happen if I installed an OSX that required an 'unfinished'/failed firmware update.

I'm a bit out of my depth here so would love any advice! The data on the drive isnt super critical but wouln't mind not losing it.

Guess your 680 gone south.

Try another GPU and most important of all, do a Bootrom Backup, maybe there you have a full / corrupt Firmware.

Thanks for the response! Hope not, it was working fine when I packed it away :(. Since that is my only mac card, I'm unsure if I can install firmware setups without the grey boot screen.

You might read through this thread and also update your subject to be MP1,1-5,1. The 6,1 is the "Trashcan" Mac Pro.
