Triple GPU 5770 Mac Pro 2012

Hi

can i buy 2 more 5770 Ati cards (total of 3) and put them in my system? its for Final cut pro X, i know about the power supply thats not a problem. Am i going to have better performance? or is not even detected the 3rd one?

Take a look on http://www.barefeats.com tested with more than two but not sure 5770 was used, more high-end cards.
 
does any one know the answer to my question? am i going to gain more power in FCPX by putting 2 extra ati 5770 ?
i know that if i add 1 more i will for sure, but if i add 3, does it detect it?
 
Dual GPUs are generally not supported well by many programs. I don't expect OS X would know what to do with triple GPUs, let alone individual programs that would need to be expressly written to address them.
 
I'm guessing you would be much better off putting your $ toward a single more modern card that would outperform 3x5770s.
 
Both FCPX and DaVinci Resolve can take full advantage of multiple GPUs.

I don't see where there should be a problem with a 3rd GPU in the system—as long as it's properly powered.

That said, FCPX was smooth for me on a single default 5870 1GB even before I switched to R9 280X 3GB.

Why do you feel you need three cards?

Plus, a single 5870 showed good deal better performance over a 5770, so unless you already have the 3 x 5770 I would look for a 7970 pair instead of the three you are intending or asking of.

How are you planning to install 3 double-width 5770 video cards even if you work out the power issue? I know there are PCIe slot extension cables available, but still where do you expect to hold the third card inside the case? Finally the third card would be connected only through PCIe 2.0 x4, so its performance is definitely degraded. We just don't know by how much without testing.

More likely than not, all three 5770s will be recognized, but my 4890 ATI cards in my 2007 MP (put there only to answer your question) are to old to use with FCP. To install three double width PCIe GPUs you have to remove hard drives 2-4, if any, and limit your HD storage, beyond HD1, to that in the optical drive bay. I use an FSP BoosterX, also installed in the optical bay, to power my extra GPUs. See, also - https://forums.macrumors.com/showth...mes+for+up+to+3+double+wide+gpus#post18872245 .

The 5770 is so old that lots of single-GPU solutions will outperform 3 of them. Any of the bigger Kepler cards like a GTX 770 on up, or a Radeon 7950 should give you loads more OpenCL performance.
 
thanks for all your responses but i never got the actual answer to the question, does FCPX have a better performance with 3 cars 5770 ? does fcpx recognise 3 cards?

Better performance in what way? What kind of footage are you dealing with? Multicam shoots? R3D, h.264, 5D, GH4? Are you transcoding? Rendering issues?
