Tripwire Porting games for Mac on Steam

Valve's announcement last week that the Mac port of Steam would be released on May 12 is already generating much excitement but until today there's been no word on what other third party games will be available for Mac Steam users. Today Big Download has confirmed with Tripwire Interactive that its two first person shooter retail games; Red Orchestra Ostfront 41-45 and Killing Floor, will be released for the Mac via Steam.

Hell yes! I hope they use Steam Play. That's another game I own that won't be wasted money, love Valve now

Great news. Both of these games look pretty sweet. Let's hope other developers get on board sooner rather than later.

I hope Valve only allows genuine Mac efforts into their store, and leave Cider OUT.

I also hope they release the Mac version of Doom III on it, and make Ressurection of Evil Mac-compatible too

I know it would only complicate things for submissions, but I wouldn't mind if some old games were Cider like Doom 1-2, Wolfenstein, Quake 1, Unreal 1, Commander Keen etc. They'd have virtually no loss in performance considering their age.

Maybe the rule could be if a game uses software rendering (aka old!) then Cider is allowed? It'd bring in a lot of games.

All of those games except unreal already run through emulation with dosbox on windows so there should be no problem running them on the mac dosbox. In fact, you might be able to copy the game files and run them on dosbox like with gog.com games.

For many titles like EA's games it would be cider or nothing, and the option is always welcome. The benefit of purchasing Cider games on Steam rather than a different download service is if the performance sucks, you can just download the PC version in Bootcamp.

Red Orchestra Ostfront 41-45 and Killing Floor

Not sure about killing floor, but Red Orchestra was developed using the "Steam Engine" so comes as no surprise that it will be ported. Expect alot of the HL2 modded games to be released on mac by the developers, especially if valve are including the required tools in their SDK.

Garrys mod and Trackmania are 2 titles that spring to mind.

Well, I would be happy if they would just add an icon in the store telling us whether it is genuine of a cider port, and not just say it's a mac-game...

So .. what should i buy if i am also a gamer ?

From a strictly gaming perspective, Macs are expensive, except for laptops. I travel and am happy with my MBP. But in this case it should be viewed as a 2in1 computer. The MacBookPro is competitive price wise with PC laptops capable of gaming. At home, I have a secondary PC gaming rig, a rig I bought for $700, then upgraded the video card and added memory. As long as I game, most likely I'll stay with that arrangement. I have an old G5 at home too, which runs great. I'll have to think about what I'll do when it dies- get an iMac or just use my laptop for my Mac stuff.
