I usually use Firefox as a browser but this morning decided to use Safari and a page came up saying I had a Trojan and it wanted me to close the box showing and run some cleaner. I simply closed the browser itself ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Ver 1.3.1.628 and nothing was found. Was this likely some type of spam where they want you to hit close and run a scan or is there an issue. First time this has happened to me. Not sure if I need to run some sort of other virus type app from time to time.

It's a scam. You did the right thing. Now enjoy the rest of your day knowing you are still safe!
