Looking for suggestions.

So I have a jailbreaked 2.2 3G iPhone. I'm getting ready to update to 2.21, so I'm trying to backup my phone first. Plugged it into my PC, which is my main iphone computer, and it would fail the backups, I'd get told the phone disconnected after sitting there for a few hours.

I thought it was crappy PC/windows stuff, so tried it on my macbook, same thing, it'd sit there for hours saying it was syncing, then fail.

Tried it on my work iMac today, after 3 hours the progress bar was moving once in a while, obviously very slowly, until I finally got the "phone disconnected" message.

Looks like my last successful backup was early Feb. on the PC using the same cable, though I'd had some similar backup issues in the past.

So not a computer specific issue, I restarted the phone before the iMac sync, tried with different version of itunes depending on which computer we're talking about, anything I should look at? If it's SW, if I tell it to upgrade to the official 2.2.1, will that leave my data intact and then try backing up then? I may have to try that.

It's worth a try upgrading to 2.2.1 but keep in mind that if you want the potential to unlock your phone, make sure it is a custom IPSW to preserve the baseband.

But then again, if the phone becomes dormant and unresponsive during syncing, I'd be worried that it would kink out mid-installation and you've be left with a brick.

yeah, I'm not worried about the unlocking part. I think most of the problems I've had were backing up. Maybe for giggles I'll try moving a gig or two of music over just to see if it transfers ok.

Yeah, just loaded 1.9 GB of video podcasts onto the phone with no trouble and pretty quickly.
