first time i've had to post a question, usually i can find everything i need in old posts, so thanks to those who post.
problem- i bought an external dvd burner (plextor) and have used patchburn to allow my pb 12'' g4 to recognize it. I created a disk image (a .dmg file) and now i'm trying to use disk utility to create the dvd. After i start the process the blue bar hasn't moved after an hour. Is this normal and i'm just not patient? I have the external burner connected w/ usb, is fast enough or do i need to use a firewire cable? any other ways to burn this movie to a dvd w/o toast or dragon burn? thanks for any help.

do you have usb2 or 1? - 1 probably won't be fast enough, firewire should be fine. This can happen with bad media too tho (and there's a lot of that about)

and it's not normal....

i'm pretty sure it's a usb2, the media is memorex dvd-r. the external burner didn't come with a firewire cable but it can be connected with one, i was trying to avoid buying one if i could.

the drive may be usb2 but is your pb?

the first revision of the 12" pb didn't have usb2, a way you can tell its rev. a is if it's 867MHz.

whether or not thats the case, you might as well just buy a firewire cable, it's not that expensive.
