Trouble connect iPad to monitor

My friend used to be able to connect his iPad to a monitor at the Bowling Club fine, using a HDMI dongle. He's run Keynote through it to provide presentations to members and friends.

However, recently, the iPad display isn't showing on the screen at all - instead the monitor simply shows an image of a monitor/phone/connector that looks like a "How to connect screen".

He says it began after a recent update, but I'm wondering if there's a simpler explanation.

I'm not sure how to help - does any one have any suggestions on how to resolve this, please?
 
Well, recent iOS updates such as iOS 12 have definitely implemented changes as to whether an iOS device trusts a USB device connected to the Lightning port; this was done to defeat hardware boxes that were being sold to crack unlock codes (PIN or password) via the Lightning port. It's possible that the dongle is running afoul of this change. Is it an official Apple dongle?

There may be problems even if it is an official Apple dongle. I myself have had trouble playing music with an official Apple Lightning-to-30-pin adapter connected to a stereo that used to work flawlessly prior to iOS 12. Now it is hit or miss: usually it won't play, but every once in a while I get the sequence right, and it works. I don't know yet whether the proper sequence is to have the iPad fully unlocked and awake before plugging in the dongle, or what. I would suggest to your friend that she or he try making sure that the iPad is awake and unlocked prior to plugging in the dongle; you might need to play with trying it with or without the monitor already connected to the dongle first.

Is there any way guide to changing security settings in the iPad to allow for a connection?
 
I myself have been getting an issue where the screen on the monitor will cut on & off. Not quite flickering since the time for the screen going black is like half a minute or more, but I haven't seen anything about this elsewhere.
