Hi, I have a 16" MacBook Pro running os 10.15.6 I transferred a folder via thunderbolt from another MacBook and I could only
move it to my desktop. I tried to move the folder off the desktop and it won't let me move it onto the drive.
I clicked info for the drive and it says I don't have permission to write on the drive but I'm the administrator so what gives?

If it's the root folder (first level of Macintosh HD) then it won't let you. Other 'protected' folders will let you do it once you've entered the admin password.

Ok, thank you. I don't understand though, its a folder full of samples and I dragged it from the desktop to the mac HD
and it just won't let me drop it on the drive icon. so I clicked info for the drive and clicked the triangle
and tried to change the permissions and the message comes up that I don't have permission to change
the permissions for the drive But I'm logged in as admin.
IT didn't give me a chance to enter a password or anything just gave me that message.
any ideas? thanks!

Move it to your home folder, any of the folders, or create one so it is inside /Users/account_name

Yeah you don't want anything at the "root" level of you hard drive other than what's already there. Past versions of macOS weren't as particular about this.

So I guess I'll just leave the folder on the desktop? I can't figure out a way to drag any of the folder onto the drive.

So I can just open up that folder and drop my samples in say, documents?
Sorry this is all new to me. I've been a mac user for almost 30 years but this
is just weird.

So if I get into my home folder and drag the samples to documents, its going to cause problems?
Sorry to be so stupid, Im not new to mac but new to catalina. Never encountered this in 30 years
of using the mac.

No. Folders in your User Account are not at root level. Root level means, basically, what you see when you double-click the hard drive.
