I'm trying to update to the newest version and it keeps saying "An error occured" with no error number. This happens while it is "Preparing the install"

Is anyone else having this issue?

I am it just says estimating time to download then never starts.

It then says The Apple TV Update could not be downloaded at this time try again later.

Been trying for 24 hours now.

Anyone fixed this problem?

I am on Apple TV 2

I have fixed mine.

I updated my itunes to version 10.6

Then I plugged in my Apple TV to my Mac via USB.

Then I restored the Apple TV

It reloaded it with correct software

i found that my default DNS servers were causing this issue for me.
i temporarily changed DNS to OpenDNS and it updated instantly.

Could you tell me how to do this?

Thanks

I went into the configuration page of my modem/router (to which the Apple TV is connected) and changed the DNS servers (both primary and secondary) to 8.8.8.8 (this is google's DNS server) instead of using the ones provided by my ISP. Rebooted the modem. At that point the Apple TV had no problem downloading and installing the update. When the procedure finished, I re-enabled the DNS servers from my ISP.

This saved me a micro USB cable.

Thank you

Thank you so much! Changing the DNS settings worked perfectly. Thank you! Finally my Apple TV is downloading the update.

Thanks, I will give this a try.

I have never had trouble updating before, wondering why now.

This does seem to be a DNS issue much like with the 5.1 updates on other i devices. I went to network settings and chose to manually configure TCP/IP setting and left everything the same except DNS server. There I changed it to 8.8.8.8, which did the trick immediately.

I hope that helps!

Home sharing

So I've now managed to get the Wifi working after the update but can't seem to get home sharing working. Both the ATV and PC have this enabled. I have also downloaded the latest version of iTunes. Both are on the same wireless network. Anybody got any ideas?
