iPod Trouble with 5th Gen iPod w/ Video

Hey everyone,

I'm having a bit of difficulty with my 60GB 5th Gen iPod with Video.

Lately, when the iPod has been synched with a computer, it has been working flawlessly.

The trouble comes when I've un-synched it from the computer. When I've tried to turn it on to use it, the screen light comes on, but nothing displays on the screen. Just a white screen, compared with the normal screen output when it is synched with a computer. Also, when this happens, there is no "processing noise" coming from the iPod.

Another thing is that once I've turned on the iPod, I cant shut it off by holding down the Play/Pause button. I basically have to re-synch it with a computer, or let the battery run out.

Is there anyone out there that can tell me what's wrong with my iPod? I know its not a screen issue. What could it be?

Can you eject it from the computer, but not unplug it and see what happens?

If it still works, try and get it into diagnostic mode and run all the tests.

First off, I'm so terribly sorry to Jessica Lares for leaving this vacant for so long.

Also, I tried ejecting without unplugging, and it still works as normal.

As for the diagnostics, I went through them, and all seems normal. However I'm not an expert on the Pass/Fail status of these tests, so there may still be a problem there.

Anyone have any ideas?

I have a 2G Nano that won't shut down sometimes by holding play/pause unless 'phones are plugged into the 'phone jack.
I hesitate to ask but have you done a hard reset? That same Nano won't play after a sync unless I do a reset. Sounds simplistic but it works for me.

Hey Rawkfist,

I did do several hard resets while performing just about every diagnostic test on the iPod (Except the accessories test(s) b/c i don't own a firewire -> 3.5mm Ipod connector cord).

Surprisingly, when I just now started it up to test it without being plugged in, the iPod worked like normal.

However, if memory serves me right, it might try to revert back to the blank screen startup if i try starting it up at a later date.

I will keep this thread updated with any new information about the iPod if it does this again.
