Trouble with external speakers on Core Solo mini

I just installed a new Core Solo Mac mini for my mother. I moved her over from an old HP. She has a pair of cheap Polk Audio speakers that she would like to use. However, after plugging them in I got no sound and in the Sound Preference Pane they do not show up as an output device. All I can get is the internal speaker. They were working just fine on the HP so I know they work.

Any suggestions?

Sure you didn't plug them in the microphone plug?

Trouble with Speakers

I'm having the same problem with my brand-new dual processor Mac Mini. I have old Labtech speakers with a subwoofer (they worked fine on my G4 AGP Graphics).
