Trouble with files....same one keeps appearing

When I download a file that has been sent to me as an email, then I click on it, and it goes into the DOWNLOADS area, and I open it and have a look at the file. Then when I go back to my email and open another file, it shows up in DOWNLOADS etc, but when I open that second file, it is the first file that opens all over again. arrggghhhh.... please help this rookie mac user out
